As we all know, there are Seven Wonders of the World. UNESCO selects world heritage sites considering the masterwork and its cultural heritage. It’s time to embark on a journey to explore one of the breathtaking wonders in the world: the Taj Mahal!
The Taj Mahal was built in the 17th century by the Mogul emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. It is a mosque and tomb in India and its chief architect was Ustad Ahmad Lahauri.
It is considered as one of the most magnificent creations in the world and is a famous tourist attraction in India.
Significance: Shah Jahan’s wife Mumtaz Mahal became ill after the birth of her 14th child and she asked her husband to make her the most beautiful tomb in the world. Mumtaz Mahal died in June 1631 and so Emperor Shah Jahan started the construction of this amazing building.
Construction: Precious stones were brought from other countries to adorn the building of Taj Mahal. The building materials used were brick-in-lime mortar with red sandstone and marble, including precious stones.
Every feature of the Taj Mahal is significant in its own way such as the lovely gardens, the minarets, the tomb, the gateway and the intricate inlay work of marble. ‘Pietra Dura’ technique was used to decorate the Taj Mahal which consisted of floral and calligraphic inlays.
A significant feature is that the artwork was purely handmade by highly skilled artisans from Agra.
