Since October 2019, bushfires have killed 25 people and destroyed more than 700 homes across Australia. Not only people and houses but also animals such as many endangered species have also been affected. The fires have spread to Queensland, Victoria and South Australia.
Describing a personal experience; 16 year old Gabriel Kam, said that he lost his home and the effect would never go out of his memory.
Gabriel’s village, Balmoral was first hit by the bushfires on December 19. Two days later his home was destroyed. His family had to go by the words of the firefighters as there wasn’t anything left to rescue from their home. He also said that there was no time to rescue anything other than their two kittens and some clothes. Gabriel and his family are now staying with their family friends. He said that the only way to stop the fires was if there were continuous rains in the affected areas.
It is good to know that many people have donated money and other necessary materials to help the victims and also to rebuild their houses. Shakya Perera
